My laptop has decided to start acting up the battery unplugged from the mains lasts, 5 minutes tops. The adapter while plugged in gets to such a temperature that it is untouchable. Is this a sign not to use the damned machine???
Is it a compaq by any chance? My friends has done the same thing.
I have an HP that does this (Compaq and HP are essentially the same company) I just don't use it on my knee. Only cure for a battery failing is a new battery, how old is the laptop and what brand is it?
might be the charging circuit in the laptop, if its not working as it should the power supply may be overloading leading to overheating.
I reckon your battery is knackered, if you leave them on mains supply all the time is significantly shortens the life.
If you have a carer with the same machine give their battery a 5 minute try and see if theirs gets warm, don't leave it too long just long enough to see if your PSU heats up quickly.
If it proves to be the battery look here

Cheaper than a mainboard.
well its just come back from repair shop where charger is plugged into laptop is faulty shorted battery out . And is causing adapter to over heat. Needs a new motherboard, he said its not worth the cost of parts and labour. £25 to look at it he charged but if he repairs it we get that knocked off repair price
What is the laptop?
An acer 7730 m8
I'll have a look tomorrow for you!
I agree, I repair laptops and PC all day. The power connector on the Motherboard is always a weak point. I replace these all the time. Takes about an hour, with strip down.
no mate battery buggered as well cancel order.
Julian, part part costs < £4 and a new battery costs £31 so even if you run it off the mains till you can get a battery it is still worth doing. In fact it is still worth doing if you only ever run it off the mains![]()
when using it on mains for any time It best to remove the battery. this will lengthen the life of the battery.

Only if you have a carp laptop...... Oh yes he does! But the battery is already dead![]()
This advice is a bit out of date with new laptops that have decent power boards in them. Certainly any Apples with intel or G4 processors.
Darren please note my Signature THANK YOU!!![]()
Sorry you'll have to put up with Apples with me around. Especially if you pop round to try my studio![]()
