Large Format photography group - From "zero to hero!"

Ok, final update.

I was about to pull the trigger on the Intrepid yesterday as I had 10% discount....but before I did, I did one last Google search for something else and lo and behold, managed to find one that had gone under the radar. I have paid this morning and expect it perhaps between Christmas and New year. Watch this space.

I need to source some DDS as well as a lens panel. I managed to pick up a lovely Nikkor 240mm f/5.6 when the WYC sale was at 30%. Didn't have it in me to wait for the 40% in case it went.

What have I done!???

Edit: @soupdragon - can I ask, how are you processing your 8x10 images? I mean, what container more than anything. I have been developing my own 4x5 B&W (I also have a JOBO but haven't tried colour). I have been offered one of the paper drums which I believe makes it possible, although it's not one of the expert ones so not perfect.

I lifted that post from my web site, where there is a little more info. If you're interested, there's a link now at the bottom of my signature.

Edit to add
I assume the link has been spotted by anyone interested, so I've removed it as a little bit too close to advertising for me to be comfortable with it.

It is surprisingly easy to process 8X10” chromes.
The big ticket items are the Stearman Press 8X10 tank and the 2 Cinestill tempering bath heaters.
All the ancillaries like the tempering baths, jugs and funnels were bought from a supermarket.

If you want a more detailed explanation of my work flow, I am more than happy to post pictures and my personal procedure?

I am sure it would help more people than me, too.

I can't see me getting into developing colour but knowing which tank(s) work best for B&W would be good.

Hello LF folks.

For those of you who shoot 8x10, what rucksacks are you using? I currently have nothing big enough. I have been looking at the Lowepro Photo Trekker AWII which seems to fit the bill for not too bad a price. Any alternatives I should consider?

I use a Mindshift Firstlight 40L for my 8x10 kit, used to use an f64 (came with my Deardorff) but it’s far too unstructured for walking any serious distance. The Mindshift has a nice internal frame and an adjustable harness and I’ve walked all day with my setup and it’s comfortable (at least as far as 8x10 goes!).

Here’s the video that got me to pick one up:

Looks very good but also a little out of my price range at the moment. Maybe I didn't think this whole 8x10 thing through.

Can't see many of us rushing out to buy one, but here's a Chamonix 8x20 shoot on Skye starting at 27:45mins.

Maybe he's seen this year's pricelist! I could only see US sites with pricing and that was $493 for 25 sheets, but definitely a case of checking many times before drawing the darkslide

That appears to be just 16 minutes long and dedicated to a lens review, AFAICS?

On a related note, I was momentarily confused by what thing is that starts sailing across the sea behind Ruth at 26:55.

On closer inspection, it appears to be an island, but you have to look carefully at the distant mountains to realise the whole scene is slowly panning and that the parallax makes it look like some sort of giant sea monster is swimming past. :D

Slightly OT, but does anyone know what the MF camera used in the first Skye lighthouse photo in that video is? The camera has a WLF and is wearing has a shift lens (possibly tilt/shift, but I think he only used shift), and I'd have guess the most likely candidate would be a Hassy, but it just doesn't look like a Hassy to me!

Was it not a Mamiya RB67?

Mamiya 67 yes - but I can't see a wind on lever on the film back, so RZ67 I think.

Shift lenses exist for both; my first lens for my RZ67 was the shift lens. Additionally, the RZ67 has a tilt/shift adapter which uses special lenses to give both shift and tilt. Large format is lighter and more convenient though.

Just to add: Canham make an 8x20 back for my 10x8 camera, should I wish to try that size; I think 4x10 would be simpler and cheaper though as I have the necessary half slides.

Whilst I still haven't got a proper rucksack for my 8x10, I have had the first negatives back and....they look really good surprisingly. Focus is pretty good on most of them. I missed one ever so slightly wide open but thankfully I took two of the same composition.

I ended up having to go for a huge hiking backpack for my 8x10, picked up a Fjallraven Kajka second hand and it's perfect although a bit heavy
