I just dropped my lap top and i seem to have killed an inch deep stripe of pixels all the way across the top of the screen. They're still lit but only showing white. Are they gone for good? Luckily they seem to fall on the head of each web page and don't mess with my browser info. Rather annoying though, doh!:'(
 
The delicate circuit boards along the edge of the back of the screen will have been damaged, they can be soldered but no guarantee it will fix it, screens are relatively cheap now, especially common sizes such as 15.4 15.6 17 inches, can be had from the bay for around £70, and easy to replace.

Ok, how easy are they to install then, is it a case of slotting a few wires in or more detailed surgery?

Very easy to 'fit', but sometimes can be a b****r to get to due to the fact that on most laptops you will need to strip the base to get the screen disconnected.

It's fiddly, but very 'do-able'
 
Search eBay for your laptop model, you could find one on sale 'for parts' that has a good screen, then way you can be sure the connections will be correct.
 
I did that on my laptop and got it replaced on my home insurance it was picked up the day after i reported it and got it back 3 days later with a new screen cost me £50 excess.
 
To install an new LCD panel its usually 2-6 screws on the front trim around the screen, these are hidden by little rubbers or vinyl stickers, then pull the bezel towards you and using a credit card split the plastics around the edge, then usually 4 or 8 screws hold the actual panel to the hinges, then 2 cables to disconnect, one for the data at the back and one for the inverter below. This is just a rought guide but 90% of laptops are like this, only ones that differ are LED backlit types.

These are fairly easy, no need to strip the unit, just the front screen bezel as directed above. Good luck :thumbs:
