Yes
any advice for gig photography, i got two coming up pretty soon, the first being on the 28th november, in a nightclub stylee pub/rock club thingy, so the lighting is gonna be dim and colourful

the 2nd being in a mates pub (tyla from the dogs d'amour) so the lighting in the pub is gonna be dim, and dark (extrememly small pub)

any advice for me, i've worked out i'm gonna need a f number of about 1.8-2.8? and the iso i'm thinking of about 200, but if i'm wrong please lemme know

also, I'm using NO FLASH!! as i want the atmosphere and mood of the gig to shine through, please help!!

Pop xx

1.8 should serve you well, depending on the lights avaialble the ISO might need to be upped accordingly. What lens are shooting with?

i got a tamron 17-35mm and a canon 50mm but i'll probably use the canon all the time as it's a 1.8 lol,

(but i also got my 18-55mm and the 75-300mm but i won't use the last two i dont think!)

Have you a flash you can use (without flashing) for its autofocus assist beam?

the f1.8 will be the lens you need and your gonna neeed a high iso especialy in the pub.

i would go in early check the lights out and see if the soundman or someone in charge can help with the lights.ive done it before and most are willing to help.sometimes they dont even realise how bad the lights are positioned and are pleased with suggestions.

Agree that the Nifty Fifty should be all you need, although the ISO will probably be need to nearer to the 800-1600 range...

In a pub? Youd need a shorter length than a nifty. Ive done a few pub gigs before and I got on well with an 18-55. Down at the 18mm end you can then get in the guitarists guitars rather than just a slice of them. I also used only around an ISO of 400 ( my D80 isnt great over that I find) and the aperture as low as possible with the shutter at around 1/30th. The pub was lit only by wall lights and extra lights so its possible.

Regards, James

I work in a club, I don't know what lenses the photographers there are using bu the
50mm is not enough. A flash will be critical. This is just from what I see on a regular basis.

well thanks guys, all these replies are ace!

the first gig is getting closer, and as i've done no gig photography before, imma bit nervous tbh! but its a band full of mates, so i should be fine methinks! (hopefully)

and, i shall go to the venue beforehand, maybe with the guys and see if i can get a few practice shots in of them warming up maybe!!

cheers again, and i shall post the images up when and if i get any decent ones! lol!

OK key tip

- forget what the guys are doing - think about what the lights are doing and take photos in time with the lights - they will follow a Sequence - follow it to get the good photos.

oh, wicked tip! i don't think i'd have thought of that tbh!

i'm getting nervous now, first time gig photographing...EEK!!

It depends on the lights.. one venue I used to go to, had them bog standard rack of 4 coloured lights and they would follow a pattern, but another one with a better set up had no pattern what so ever and I'm fairly sure it runs off of the beat of the music.

just done another gig at the black hole of mansfield.
otherwise known as the intake.
3200 iso(realy) . f2.8 and nothing less than 1/60.
even trying to follow the light patterns is bloomin hard work.
i use a sigma 18-50 f2.8.
the fifty is faster, but as said , you realy needed a wider lens.

i've borrowed the 50 off of a friend, and another tamron 17-35mm, which goes down as far as f3.2, i dont know if it'll be enough
