If this has been covered already maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I have almost finished my website using Serif Webplus x5 and I have a domain name and hosting purchased with 123 reg. How do I upload/launch my website. Do I need to use this FTP, whatever this is.

Simple language please.

Thanks

jeff

FTP is just a method of transferring data over the internet.

Hopefully 123reg will have given you some logon details to your hosting. There should be some information there about the file structure too. (something along the lines of "Upload your website to the public_html folder")

You'll need an ftp client first. I use Filezilla because it's free and it's reliable.

What you then basically do is connect to your hosting site (think of it as another folder on your hard drive - it's just not physically on your computer) and upload the files. Filezilla splits the screen into 2. Left hand side is your computer, right hand side is your website and you just drag & drop as you see fit.

Your website should have an index page (usually index.html or index.php) which should be loaded at the root of your website (usually a public_html folder). As soon as this file is uploaded to your website, you should be able to type your domain name into an address bar and see your site.

Hope this helps!

Ian.

Start with individual folders for images etc and then, if needed, seperate folders for different types of image etc.

Make sure the folders that are intended to be replicated on your webspace are in lower case with no spaces when you upload them. Once you have your root files sent over then you can upload any other folders in one go

It may seem a minor point right now but one day you'll be thankful you did it that way.
