Having read the posts on talk photography I have decided to replace my crt monitor with an lcd one. I will probably go for a Dell. Would I gain anything by getting one with an hdmi input and a new graphics card with an hdmi out. The graphics card I have now was cutting edge 2 years ago so is fine for photo editing. Your collective advice will be appreciated

HDMI won't give you anything over DVI in terms of quality, it's just a different type of connection for digital signals. Either are much better than a VGA d-sub which is analog and prone to ghosting and interference.

I recently bought an HP LP2475w having read several reviews that said it's an exceptional monitor. It's absolutely lush and if your budget will stretch this far I'd thoroughly recommend it!

It's wide gamut which means it's capable of displaying bright colours. For example I took some carnival piccies yesterday and one group were dressed in very bright colours such as fluorescent pinks, greens and blues. On my laptop screen they don't look fluorescent, they just look like normal colours, but on the HP they are much closer to the real thing. Other examples where the wide gamut thing is useful is sunsets and grass.

HD resolution is great for photo work, allows plenty of the image to be used even when all the tools are open. I agree with pxl8; get a digital connector, especially if you are thinking of HD.

I'd suggest a model with an IPS, PVA or MVA panel as opposed to TN, because you get better image quality and better colours. IPS are the best but the most expensive. VA panels are still good but more affordable, such as the Dell 2407 and 2408.
