LEE and Cokin filters

Hi all

I use the LEE filter system (adapter rings and holder etc) and want to get a couple of ND grad filters.

I'm an architectural photographer so don't have a huge need for ND grads and therefore don't want to spend a lot of money. However, I'm going to the Lake District in a few weeks and would like to use them for some landscape photography.

I've looked at the Cokin filters as they're the same size as the LEE ones. But before I buy, I want to know if the Cokin ones have a protective 'barrier' on them to prevent light leaks? The Big Stopper has a foam 'ring' running around the glass to plug the gap created when it slots into the holder. Do Cokin filters have the same or similar?

Thanks
Neil

I think it's just the stoppers that have the foam surround, my Lee ND grads don't anyway. I usually cover the top of the holder with something when using grads though, force of habit.

My Lee grads don't have the foam surround either. However the filters are quite a bit larger than the lens front and fit quite close to the lens so I think light leaks are unlikely. In my experience I have certainly never had any problems with light leaks. Although I have never covered the top of the holder it does seem like a good idea.

Be careful, some Cokin grads will cause colour cast to your images (especially if you stack 2 or more filters) of the magenta variety which will pretty much trash your shots.

Hitech are a good alternative to Lee but cost pretty much the same.

I tested the STEALTH GEAR filters, very decent for the surprising price!

I would agree with Stu. Hitech will be much better than Cokin. Have a look around for any second-hand ones, including Lee, if you want to keep the cost down.
