You don't say which body you have but I suspect one of the 70-200's would be fine.....an f/2.8 would help the focus along a little. You might want something else a little wider for the paddock shots though....perhaps a 16-35 or similar.
Track based motorsport probably needs 300mm or longer but I'm guessing that you'll get closer to the action so the 70-200/2.8 should work. I'd get it a few days early and practice your panning with it...don't want to be embarassed by "technique failure" on the big day eh.
If he's covering it for the mag he'll have press credentials and a 70-200 will be fine. It's fine even if you're not accredited to be honest. Match it up with a 24-70 for inside corner shots/service stages and that should do it.
