So i've now got my EOS 500d and im just beginning to get to grips with all the extra funcionality compared to my old P+S.
I currently have a Tamron 28-80mm and a Tamron 75-300mm.
I'm going to Bulgaria in January snowboarding and want to get myself a wide angle lens to complement the scenery. Im quite interested in landscape photography so this wont be a single use purchase. I've read up abit on here and have seen people have suggested the Sigma 10-20mm or the Canon 17-85mm. To me, the benifit of the 17-85 is it has the IS which could be handy up on the top of a mountain where having a tripod is out of the question, but is it going to be noticabley narrower than the 10-20mm??
As its going to be handheld do i need to be getting something thats super fast or as its a short focal length will it not be too hard to control?
I dont really have a budget, but id like to pay as little as possible.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Pete

Is 17mm noticeably narrower than 10mm? Very much so, but be aware how wide 10mm is! For mountains you likely won't need 10mm. As for whether you'll struggle without a tripod, probably not much at either focal length, 1/30 should be adequately fast for 10mm/17mm as long as you're not too shaky...1/60-1/100+ and they should all be keepers.

If you're somewhere snowy then available light photography is typically easy. You'll want some exposure compensation if shooting in automatic/semi-auto modes mind.

I've got a Canon 10-22mm and IS is not an issue with lens for me and I can happily use it hand held.
You would probably find the same with the Sigma 10-20mm
If you do decide on the Canon 17-85mm you might as well sell your Tamron 28-75mm.
Perhaps could also consider a super wide angle lens as well.
You'd be surprised how wide there lenses are so it might be worthwile going to shop and trying one.
Some people don't like using super wide angle lenses for landscapes but I tend to use mine most of the time.

Tamron 17-50, nice and wide.

28mm is your widest.. for a crop camera, I'd like 17mm to 18mm on the wide end.

10mm is much much wider than 17mm let alone 28mm you have now!

yeah i think the 17-85 is standing out to me most at the moment that way ive got the wide end at 17mm but alse a fair reach for more zoomed shots.
What counts as a "super wide angle lens"?

thanks for your input guys! much appriciated!

:plusone:

A much better lens than the 17-85mm and a faster lens as well for about the same price, personally I would get the tamron 17-50mm f2.8

It depends, on a Full frame camera,(5Dii Film etc) 17mm is pretty wide

But your camera crops the focal lengths to 1.6 times, so the sigma 10-20 behaves on your camera like a 16-32mm Lens would on film.

10mm is super-wide angle on a crop camera Many people find the 10mm end very extreme though, 17 mm is considerably wider than you have now and seems to fit the bill.

Sorry if i've confused you! im not very good with words!

OP has a cropped sensor camera, so the 17-50mm would frame like a 27.2-80mm lens due to the small sensor on the 500D. The 10-22mm or 10-20mm lenses are great, you get some extreme images, due to the fisheye nature of them, but practically, my 10-22mm doesn't get used that much, and the 17-50mm would be more practical, works as a landscape lens, as well as a general walkaround lens, personally the extreme wide angle lenses have limited use.

one on TP for sale at the moment
