Lens dilemma

 Just been having this exact conversation about some Nikons lenses :) General idea was that the law of diminishing returns means that the better lens which might cost twice as much will be better BUT not necessarily twice as good. :) Sounds about right to me. I am currently errring on the idea of getting the really good but not top of the range lens and using the saving to buy another lens therefore giving me more flexibility.

I think that 28mm on a 50d is no where near wide enough. I'd go for the 24-105 if that's your poison, but I also think I'd consider other options that will give you wider choices.

I had a dilemma earlier in the year for a lens on my 50d. The 24-105 was a contender, but I am glad now that I went wider.

Hope that helps.

I think this is a no brainer. The 24-105mm has to be the one. The next choice will be do I get a 70-200mm or a wider angle 10-20mm which will depend on what you enjoy photographing.

50D plus Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Or
50D Canon EF 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM
This is not as wide but longer

Is it worth the extra £500 for the L glass and shorter reach?

It's just not the choice to make ... the 28-135mm IS is an OK at best lens, with old IS. It's also way over-priced. You're better with a 17-55mm 2.8 IS, or Tamron 17-50mm or Sigma 17-70 if you want a single lens. The L is really nice (had three of them and all good) but you will likely need to add a wid angle. It works very well on a full-frame range wise.

I have noticed with the lenses that I've got that the L stands for a lot! The quality with something like the 50D is noticeable. Also with it beig f4 thoughout you will get faster shutter speeds at the top end compared to the 28-135.
If you have the chance and the money, always go for the L :)

I have the Sigma 17-70 and the 10-20 but will now have two bodies my 30D as well as the 50D
May be I just get the body for now and think more on it
Oh and I will be getting a 100-400

Look what you've done now. Chaz only wanted advice between two lenses and you have confused him by telling him he's asked the wrong question and he should buy a lens that he already has. :)

I have the 50d and a 24-105 and id pick it every time, its built like a tank and takes cracking pictures. you have the 10-20 and the 17-70 for anything wider as well.
