I've got a Nikon D700 and am looking to buy a lens for taking images of wildlife - birds in particular. Looked at the Sigma 12-400 and Tamron 200-500 jobs but was wondering if a prime Nikon 180 f2.8 or, but far more expensively, 300 f4 with a Nikon teleconvertor would give me a satisfactory alternative?

Thoughts welcome

Quality wise the 300f4 + 1.4 or 1.7 TC will give you a 420 f5.6, or 510 f6.7, and would be my choice from your list.

The 300 f4 has a minimum focus distance of 5 feet, which makes it really useful for Butterfly or Dragonfly shots as well.

The 180 f2.8, whilst a lovely lens, is too short really.

Although I am a Canon man and have no experience of the Nikon 300 f4 I did use the Canon 300 f4 and Sigma 50-500mm for birds before I go t my 500 f4.

As Martyn says the 180 is too short. You will find that the prime will probably focus quicker than either of the zooms and you will therefore get more keepers.

FWIW I found the Canon 300 and 1.4 TC a better combo than the 50-500mm

Hope this helps

Neil
