Lens for city break-Prague

Hi.
Going to prague in few weeks time.
Am considering 16-35 or 24-70 for this trip(rent either one)

I think 16-35 would be better- wider needed inside of built and city views and small narrow streets.
Are those lenses sharp wide open?
Can bump Iso on d800 so not a problem there....

Any suggestions?
Any other lenses worth considering?
One lens and one body to keep it light

16-35 is a lovely lens and certainly very high on anyone's recommendations for Full Frame Travel, I'd go for that with maybe a 50mm in my bag for lower light if you have one?
Personally with my kit I'd take my Sigma 35mm f1.4 and Nikon 50mm f1.8G with either my Nikon 24mm f2.8 or a Samyang 14mm for wide!
 
I'd go with the 24-70 as it's more versatile and Prague is not a particularly tall city so you shouldn't struggle to fit everything in like you would in say New York.

I want to catch surise over bridge and caste at evening. castle would not need wide wide lens but not sure about bridge.

would 24 not be too narrow inside of buildings ?
 
Charles' bridge has a fairly wide walkway (I assume thats the bridge you are referring to), so 24-70 on a full frame should be fine.
 
I must go back there one day. I didnt do it justice, photographically last time I went :(
 
Just get yourself an X100. Nice and light for carrying. Panoramic mode for tighter spots. :D

or you could just take a series of shots with your D800 and stitch together in PS afterwards ;)

If it's just one lens you want to take I would recommend the 14-24mm F2.8G. There are a lot of very narrow streets which make interesting subjects. The Powder Tower is interesting and the Sex Museum is also worth a visit for something very different. Keep an eye on your wallet and camera gear. Pickpockets are in abundance.
 
Forgot there is also 17-55 2.8....
 
What have you got? Personally I wouldn't go anywhere without 24-70mm but 20mm and wider can comer very useful. One lens per trip is frankly not very wise, - like extra 600g (a loaf of bread!) will kill you
 
I use only 50 and 105mm :) so need to rent one

I had the choice between all the Nikon UWA lenses and I chose the 16-35 and don't regret it. For me the 14-24 was just too big and lacked VR which I value as you can get motion blur in people with hand held shots (rather than carrying a tripod), an effect I quite like.

For something smaller, I really like 35mm on FX and on my D700 I like the little 35mm f/2 but on your D800 you might the sharper and newer (and bigger) 1.8G version.

Not been to Prague since a stag do over 10 years ago, sorry.

I love my 16-35 but I don't actually use it that much, I actually tend to use my 70-300VR for my landscapes but that's a function of the places I go and the type of shots I like to take. The 16-35 tends to get used for Milky Way / star trail shots and the odd dramatic scene.

Nowadays for city breaks I'm more inclined to take a smaller camera such as a D3200 or I've just taken a V1 to Copenhagen which worked wonderfully, I can see me getting rid of the D3200 soon.

Generally though I find that a standard zoom is all that's required unless there is something specific you are trying to shoot.

had a look and have to say I enjoyed them

places like monastery - what lens have you used there ?

if I get decent shots from bridge, shots of castle and maybe inside of monastery then I will be happy ;)

I even plan to wake up for sunrise over bridge once ;)
 
I did it in September and only took my 24-70, something I came to regret. Luckily had a good pocket camera with me so wasn't a complete failure. Also didn't take a tripod as wanted to travel light, another mistake I won't repeat.

What camera?
 
Only a basic Sony but took some great pic's I have to say, worked well for indoor shots on a pocket gorillapod. I went for the holiday and not really togging but there's so much to photograph.

Dslr? So 24 was around 40mm?
