Beginner lens for wildlife

hi all, very new to this hobby and would appreciate some help.

I am an avid carp angler and i am very keen to put my time on the bank to some good use with my new camera (Canon 7D). A few of the lakes I fish are a couple of hundred yards to the far bank, I need some help as to what lens to buy to get some nice pictures of the vegetation and wildlife (mainly birds) on the far bank.... Money is a consideration so not in a position to spend fortunes.

How about a second hand 150-600mm sigma or Tamron, good lenses for the money and will give you a good reach. Or cheaper a second hand 150-500 sigma.
