Firstly may I say I'm a complete novice when it comes to photography.
I'm having a problem with either my Nikon D40 or my Nikon 55-200mm lens.
I can take photos in Auto mode using my 18-55mm lens without any problems, however when I change lenses and add my Nikon 55-200mm and try to take photos in Auto mode the camera refuses to take any photos.

Can anyone offer any help or advice ?
I suspect I may have a damaged lens

Many thanks

Does the 55-200 lock onto a focal point (i.e. beeps and confirms focus in viewfinder) ?

Can you hear the focus motor when you are trying to take a show ?

Have you tried it at different focal length (zoom distances) ?

Have you tried it in different camera modes e.g. A or S ?

Have you tried carefully cleaning the contacts on the lens ?

Firstly many thanks for the swift reply.

Does the 55-200 lock onto a focal point (i.e. beeps and confirms focus in viewfinder) ? Lens does not focus at all

Can you hear the focus motor when you are trying to take a show ? When I press the shutter all I hear is a click but the camera will not allow me to take a photo.

Have you tried it at different focal length (zoom distances) ? Yes, but makes no difference

Have you tried it in different camera modes e.g. A or S ? Yes, but makes no difference

Have you tried carefully cleaning the contacts on the lens ? Not yet, what would you suggest the best why to clean the contacts ?

Microfibre cloth. If that doesnt work, then a Cotton bud and isopropyl. Or possibly a screen wipe (if it contains the same).

Is it the VR lens and hence the click ?

Is it the VR lens and hence the click ? Yes

Is it worth me attempting to clean the contacts, or from what I've described so far do you think the lens could be broken ?

I wonder if there is a TP member close to you that could try your lens on their camera?

Or, what about a local camera shop? You could pop in and be cheeky ;)

Can you select manual focus and take a picture with it ? Just tried to take a photo in every mode when the 55-200mm is fitted I can't take any photos in any mode. However when I changed the lens to the 18-55mm then I can take a photo in every mode

if it dosnt focus in af then it most likely wont trip the shutter ,,,as defiance asks ,,does it work in manual focus ? does the lens have the option to turn the af on / off ?

Just to clarify, have you set the lens to manual focus and tried it (not camera mode 'Manual') ?

Definitely try cleaning the lens contacts first - on the basis it's cheap and easy.

If that fails, then it looks like a trip to the local camera shop...

I've just moved the button on the lens from A to M and I can now take photos.

As I said at the start of the thread I'm a complete novice so you will have to bear with me ;)
If it is a trip to the local camera shop and the lens is broken and won't Auto Focus is it an expensive repair ?

We were all novices once so no worries ;)

It could be a bad contact so try that first.

Also make sure that the switch is firmly in the 'A' position when you set it back and not loose or not quite engaged.

Unfortunately, repairs are seldom cheap. It's a case of getting a quote and seeing.

It could be a bad contact so try that first. I'll try and give the contacts a clean, however I feel that because the other lens works fine then it won't be that.

Also make sure that the switch is firmly in the 'A' position when you set it back and not loose or not quite engaged. I've just attempted again and ensured the switch is firmly back in the 'A' position and all appears to work well.
I'll pop into my local camera shop and get them to have a look. Many thanks for all your help
