Lens upgrades

I was recently advised by TP members to upgrade my lenses before I upgrade my D100, have decided to take that advice and am so looking for some ideas on what are really nice lenses to buy. I will hopefully then upgrade my body to a D300 in a few months and the D100 will become my backup - so would like lenses that work well on both bodies.

Currently I have Sigma 70-210D 4-5.6, Sigma 28-105D IF 3.8-5.6 and a Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro. I dont want to replace the Tamron but the Sigmas can probably go - got about a 2k budget and would hopefully get some on the second hand market.

Anyone got some nice recommendations on good replacements - I'm going to do a bit of everything (hopefully) and try out some landscapes (thinking of a 10-something lens), portraits, animals etc so would like a couple of zooms to cover as wide a range as possible. Think someone said an 80-200 f2.8 would be a good replacement.

Thanks in advance

The 16-85 Vr is a nice general purpose lens, better than most of the other kits, albeit with a lot of barrel distortion and vignetting at the 16mm end. I had quite a good experience with the Sigma 10-20 (original, not F4 version), although my experience of the Sigma service department was one of the reasons that I sold all my Sigma lenses and only bought Nikon thereafter. The other reasons are Sigma sample variation and the fact that although the marque lenses cost more initially, they hold their value far better. I have even sold some for more than I paid for them.

The 80-200 should work very nicely on the D300 and I would, of course, recommend either a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 for portrait work. The 35mm F2 F AF-D is a good 50mm equivalent on the DX sensor and the 20mm 2.8 AF-D is a nice documentary lens for shooting street scenes if you don't want to be too conspicuous. These also have the added advantage of being FX compatible if you ever go full frame.

Hope this helps.

The Tokina 12-24 is super on the D100 as is the Tamron 17-50.

Those two lenses are a potent landscape combo and are both sharp enough to help out with the D100's strong AA filter.
