Lens

To expand on the above the Canon nifty fifty as it's known is cheap way of getting fast glass (F1.8) and on a crop sensor camera like yours (and mine) 50mm is a good portrait length. You can get them in mint condition in the classifieds on here for around £55 to £60 and as little as £40 for one with a little wear. They are not the best quality build but at the price well worth having in your bag.

Even with the vouchers it's still just as expensive as buying used.

Looking at your camera bag I'd say stick the money towards a midrange tripod or flash gun (with the flash gun being an almost essential tool for portrait work if you don't already have one).

Then just buy the 50mm from Kerso or Amazon for a better price. Makes better economic sense imo.
 
Annoyingly I have a decent tripod, and have a half decent flash.... Personally Id never go to currys/dixons to buy camera gear but I need to get shot of the vouchers! haha

Might see If Kerso could offer anything!

Out of interest what lens would anyone recommend for portraits?
 
I remember reading somewhere the 70-200 2.8 can produce some pretty good ones, quite pricy though.

On a cropped sensor a nice fast prime like the previously mentioned 50mm 1.8 or 85mm?

Would depend on where you wanted to take the portraits. Indoors - 35mm/50mm primes are probably decent choices, though I find that 50mm is getting a bit long indoors on a crop sensor. You wouldn't go wrong with a 17-55mm f/2.8 (I presume you have an 18-55mm, not a 17-55mm?) but although it's a cracking lens, basically an 'L' lens in all but name, it's not cheap at around £600 second hand so might well be out of your budget - which is really where the primes come in (plus better DOF/low light performance).

I use my 50 1.8 for most of my portrait shots (about 85%) and my 70-200 f4 L for the rest which are mainly candid portraits at a distance. The 50 is great for this type of shot as you can get great DOF with it and nicely blurred background (unless you have a backdrop and then it wouldn't matter).
