Ok that seems like a pretty wide title. But I couldn't think how else to better title it considering what I want to ask. I'm looking into buying a telephoto lens, either 55-250 or 70-300 its mainly for wildlife shots and the odd photo of the moon etc. My question really is (although any suggestions for lenses will be greatly appreciated) what does either II or III mean next to the lenses and what is the difference between those and the lenses with out them. It is probably really simple but just thought I would be the one to ask that question!

Thanks again,
Liz

It means Mark 2 or 3, a revised/updated version.

Can be anything from a merely cosmetic change, as in the case of the Canon 55-250 you mention, to a completely new lens, such as 70-200L 2.8 IS MkI and MkII.

Thanks I knew it would be something simple!

Both the focal lengths you mention you may well find a bit short for wildlife unless something large. Normally 400mm is considered the minimum for birds, best bang for buck is the Sigma 150-500, the downside is it will cost you more, but look out for secondhand ones.
