hi
I'm looking for a strong reliable lighting boom to use mostly for location work with elinchrom heads and accessories does anyone have an reccomendations please ?
I looked at C stands but they are very heavy to lug about.

Manfrotto make a few so does avenger - any ideas appreciated

Thanks

Ed,

I have both "C" stand and a Manfrotto both heavy beasts, both need counter weights and sand bagging, the "C" stand is better for rough terrain though and is probably the better made of the two.

Personally, I don't rate C stands for boom arms, I'm not convinced the leg spread is big enough, always feels a little unstable, plus I like having wheels.

This is the stand I use http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/matthews_387030 heavy, but very strong.

The Manfrotto boom arm is good, as long as you don't knock it over with a light on it. Did that to mine on its first job, consequently now bent! the metal is quite thin.

I'm currently using this, and I haven't bent it yet https://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/matthews_427802

Bigger question is the kind of weight / size of the light modifier and how far you you want to boom it out. If it's heavy and big there is no getting away from needing something probably equally heavy holding the entire thing up.

Personally like c-stand's and that are heavily bagged, Kupo do some very good quality gear and not priced too silly. They do a good looking boom arm too (not personally tried it though).

I use Elinchrom stuff on location, though I work with an assistant so it's easier I use the following boom setup

Manfrotto 085BSL heavy duty boom arm
Elinchrom air stand
Manfrotto MBAG120PN bag

It all fits in the bag and is man enough to handle even my Elinchrom 150 indirect octa with ease
