Yep, its certainly slower then 2.7, despite all the pre-release stuff from Adobe about how it was going to be much quicker. It does significantly speed up if you pre-render 1:1 previews though.
In grid view select all the images you want to render, then:
Library -> Preview -> Render 1:1 Previews
Yes, it will take a while, but then you can cycle through images and zoom to 1:1 to check focus much faster. Even better if you have 2 hard disks and put you catalog and previews somewhere other than your OS and virtual memory. It takes a fair bit a space too.
What I usually do is after a shoot, import (render standard previews at import time), chuck out the real rubbish from in grid view, backup, select everything that's left and set it to render 1:1 previews over night. Then, when you get up optimise the catalog you have nice fast image viewing for more detailed edits.
As for the space issue, you can set in preferences how long you want the previews kept for.
