lightroom basic question

Hi

I've just started using lightroom (today!) and already have a query.

I have imported 4 images. Some of the images are orientated incorrectly in the original folder. When they come into lightroom they seem to be automatically rotated the correct way up but in the original folder they're still sideways, even if I export them from lightroom again.

All I want to do is rotate the images, nothing more. Could someone give me a step by step walk through on how to do that and export the images again without losing any quality/size please?

I'm sure it's very simple - sorry!
:)

Lightroom is non destructive as in it does not do anything to the original file.

In library mode, right click and go to transform.

ok - but that then rotates the already rotated image in lightroom so it's not the right way up.

Maybe I'm being stupid but the image ends up in lightroom the right way up, when I go to transform it then rotates so it is no longer the right way up?

How do I end up with the original image being the right way up?

You can do the same with windows in your original file location, right click rotate.

not sure - lightroom seems to automatically rotate the image when it imports it (well it displays the image the correct way up, rather than actually rotating the original image)
I guess the camera is storing the orientation in the EXIF, but not rotating the actual image file when storing. So when you open in something clever enough it can display correctly by reading that, but windows can't.

Sounds like you need to either, edit the original using something that won't damage the quality too much, or do the edit in lightroom and export a new rotated copy and keep the original as your 'negative'.

I have just tried it by rotating an image in L3 and exporting it and it was saved in the My Pictures folder as a rotated image. Simlarly, rotated it back again, exported and it saved it again correctly.
May sound silly but are you looking at the exported images!! if so, then I think like others it is a folder issue.

Just curious,
What OS do u have in the PC.

What happens when you view the original file in picture viewer or something..?

I've read that unlike previous versions, Windows 7 rotates images losslessly. You certainly don't get the warning anymore.

Sorry not been on for a while so missed these replies :)

Yes that's what I was trying to do but was worried about losing quality in the process.

I was a bit nervous of exporting as I'm completely new to lightroom and haven't got myself a nice step by step book so wasn't sure if I had the right settings when exporting etc. I've had a play now and you're right - it exports it correctly

windows xp - if I view it in picture viewer it is landscape but when I try to rotate it in that I get that warning saying it will reduce image quality.

Ah ok - that's good to know - I'm about to get a new laptop with windows 7 so maybe that will sort me out!

Thanks everyone :)

I've only been using LR for a few weeks but for the rotation side of things I think that if you imported the images into LR, then exported them back to the same folder without changing the filename, this should overwrite the original jpegs but they would then have the correct orientation when viewed using explorer.

Then you could manipulate the images and export to another folder and/or filename.

For future reference you might want to check which rotation settings you have applied in your camera menu as well!
