Do any of you guys and gals out there belong to local camera clubs?

I've been considering wandering along to my local Camera club here in the People's Republic of Redditch, as I believe we're blessed with a choice of two but have to say I am a little concerned having never done this kind of thing before.

I know it can only be good for someone of my limited abilities, but I'm kinda wondering what to expect on a first date  :suspect:

My experience is that they can be highly variable... a lot seem to be populated by people who sneer at all but the top of the range gear and woe be tide anyone that has the wrong brand of camera! That said a good one is a pleasure from sharing tips to shooting locations, even as a hookup for making longer trips to share fuel etc.

Anyone know of any around Maidstone in Kent?

I started going to Guildford Photographic Society in September and it's been fantastic. Learnt loads, been to some amazing talks and been really motivated by entering the club competitions.

The average age is quite a bit older than I am but everyone is friendly and they're certainly not gear snobs.

I'd highly recommend giving it a go.

I've actually just come back from my camera club, Kingswood Photographic Society, where we had a new members evening showing off there work, me included, great night lots of images and AV's to enjoy..also the guest spreakers we have are good..it's always good to see other perspectives on photography..I'd recommend you join up to your local club!

That's what I'm really concerned with I guess, that kind of thing :suspect:

I used to live in Redditch and was a member of Solihull PS. Generally, camera clubs are friendly, but the standard of photography can be high. But, there are generally people who are willing to help newcomers.

The first evening can be daunting, but contact a committee member first, probably secretary, and they can get someone to meet you on the first night and explain how the club works.

Have a look at the club's programme to see what's on at your first evening; An external speaker might be a btter night to attend than an internal competition

Go to the KCPA website for a list of clubs. Tonbridge or Ashford are big, well respected clubs. Im sure theres on in or around Maidstone. Go along and see how friendly they are. You usually get several visits before you have to join up.

Thank you for that Photodiva, i will give the website a looky. ;)

The Malling club in East Malling meets on a Tuesday and they are a right friendly bunch

Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a go and see how it goes. :)
