I have an unexpected trip to London next friday/saturday and i quite fancy the idea of doing some shots at night at maybe 12am onwards.
I would be grateful of any tips or help regarding eveything from good locations to safety etc.

plenty of locations, will depend on where you will be, but if you have not done it before, anywhere along Southbank is always good, especially late at night as you will find parking [if using a car] near all the 'hotspots' such as Tower bridge, Millennium bridge, across the river from Parliament and so on. Also further east, for docklands and greenwich for the o2 dome. If not driving, the Thames clipper service is good, but only runs till about midnight iirc, but its dark early enough now anyway.

Alternatively, give us an idea of where you will be so we can advise better

My bad....forgot to mention i will be in central london.

In that case, my post above stands, that is central london. In terms of safety, if you are on your own, then earlier evening might actually be better inasmuch as there is safety in numbers, more people around. Apply the same safety as you would anywhere really, London is no better or worse then any other city centre with perhaps a slightly lower ratio of drunks to sober people around. Be observant. Keep kit to a minimum and make sure its somehow fastened to you to prevent the opportunist grabbing and running. You will of course need a tripod so you can get those lovely long exposures.

edit: to add... be cautious around the London eye, its technically private property, and the security chaps can be very officious, but to be honest, some of the best views are further away from it anyway. Also, if you actuallt venture into docklands [as opposed to viewing it across the river or from the outside], be prepared for security to accost you there too, although a call ahead might just clear that for you, they do provide permits

Thanks very much for the tips, would it be better to take just one lens.
I have a small kit bag capable of holding body and 75-300 plus a couple more lenses.

I'm travelling down by limo as a result of winning a competition but it doesn't extend to taxi work lol so it will be train/bus/taxi/foot.

Agree with all that has been said only thing I'd add is that Waterloo bridge is an excellent vantage point. Upstream towards the Wheel and the Houses of Parliament and downstream looks towards St Paul's and the city.
