Long exposure guidelines

You feel the need to get out and be creative. Very long exposure is the order of the day (or I should perhaps say night) but you don't know how many minutes exposure you need, after fitting that 10 stop nd filter in front of the lens. Here is a tip on how to go about it.

Read the whole article on my blog.

Cheers.

Handy to have those exposure time guidelines too.

Great tip. I never actually thought about it before. Usually when I do long exposures I let it run for a few extra seconds but missed the fact that I'm dealing with large numbers so even a 1/2 stop of extra light amounts to minutes, not seconds.

Thanks for that - interesting.

As a slight hijack can anyone recommend an ND grad filter for starting out trying this stuff? Don't want to spend tons if possible but don't want to get something rubbish either.

Great tips thanks

I you want something cheap get a piece of welding glass, works really well :D

Hi Dimitri,

That's an interesting read... I've never needed to go much beyond 300 seconds for any of mine so your comments about exposures longer than 1024 seconds caught me out a little.

I've found that if the light is that low to start with, it's probably not advisable to use a 10-stop in the first place. In such situations, I would expect either a three or six stop ND to be of more use... sometimes a good circular polariser and a grad for the sky will be sufficient to give a decent amount of smoothing and movement.:)
