Hey guys, what's the best way to work out exposure lengths for taking long exposures using a nd filter for instance? Anything over 30 seconds and I'm just guessing at the moment.

Thanks.

Do you have a smartphone? There is an iPhone app called 'Longtime'. Works really well.

If you type "Long Exposure Chart" into Google you will get them in there droves.

If like Gareth said you have a smart phone then there are plenty apps for Android and Apple

Ahh, nice one guys, I never even thought about phone apps. I'll have a look

It hadn't occurred to me either!

I had a browse and went with 'Exposure Calculator' on Android.
It neatly and simply solves the three challenges that often leave me scratching my head.
1) Night time - test shot typically at ISO 12800, f3.5, 4s which allows me to check exposure histogram and composition of the image, but is too noisy to keep; so need to convert into ISO 100 and a better DoF.
2) Star Trails - same test shot as night time, but need to convert into 30s with a sensible balance of ISO and Aperture.
3) Lee Big Stopper - Test shot at 'normal' settings, but need to add 10 stops!

Tried all three of those scenarios and I reckon this App is going to save me from a migraine or two!
