I seem to remember a long time ago there was a gadget consisting of a number of disks, pinned at the centre. The idea was you set up these disks which then gave you the DOF for your shot. It must have gone out of favour. Must put my thinking cap on

Very good device, except that when I want to use mine, it always seems to be right at the very extreme ends of the calculator's range. Such as mega depth of field with a super-wide (bluebells), or a super tele at close range (birds). And it's useless for macro.
But for general stuff it is really excellent, and when you've used it a few times you certainly get to understand how depth of field works.
