Has anyone on here any experience of using their telephoto for closeup shots with the addition of extension tubes. I was just wondering after reading the macro section of Ophrys excellent site and it said it could be useful if a bird lands too close.

Hi Tom, I often use extension tubes with my 300/4. That lens is great and gives a longish working distance and the tubes pull it in nicely, giving the difference of a frame filling shot and a fair bit of cropping.

Two example links here of my most recent usage - Won't post pics, don't want to hijack the thread.

Humming Bird Moth
Berger's Clouded yellow butterfly

I sold my macro lenses and now use tubes on a 70-200L 4 IS for close ups. I much prefer the greater working distance of longer focal length, and also the flexibility the zoom offers. Quality is high because the lens is very good to start with.

However, I don't do mega-macro, usually 1:2 that sort of range. For really close work a pukka macro comes into its own.
