any one know how good or bad the sigma 120-400 apo os lens is like to use?? thinking on this or the nikon 300 f4
to use for wildlife and sport will they work ok with a tc fitted

If you would be just using the long end of the Sigma go for the Nikon and add the 1.7 tc as the prime will out perform most zooms even with a tc.

Unless it's the 300mm AF-S the Nikon lens won't work with one of their tcs, you'd need to look at the third part options, such as the Kenko Pro.

Not sure about the tc's with the older lenses(af) but the af-s version is a combination desantnik uses as a pro motorsport tog and I've seen plenty of his work on here.

I would have thought that the Sigma with it's zoom, longer length and image stabilisation would be a lot more usable, but in perfect conditions, the prime is going to produce a better image.

the siggy is a great performer. and gives more flexibility than the nikon, but the nikon will work with the tc and will give better image quality, the siggy will work with a 1.4x tc but will lose abit of af speed and image quality.

well think of which one is onna suit you better, the siggy advantages are zoom from 120mm-400mm and it has optical stabilisation built in, the nikon has better image quality,

I've got the Siggy and I quite like it. Got it as a walkabout lens for wildlife. Shame that it does not have a focus limiter.
I wouldn't use anything greater than a 1.4 or 1.5 tc. Even with that AF slow down and disappears completely at the long end.
