Yes
I've been on engagement shoot this morning and as I switched lenses I've left my lens on a bench and walk away totally for got about until I'd got home, I've nipped back to see if it was there and it wasn't, but on the way back I needed to put some fuel in the car, but as I'm doing that and thinking about my lens I've only gone and put petrol In my diesel car, currently bored waiting for the fuel doctor, what a rubbish day [emoji17]

Gutted for you, hope all works out for you.

Not nice, are you insured? Checked with local police?

That's awful. Double the disaster too. Be nice if someone has handed it in to a local police station.

Be worth an ask anyway.

I've rang the local police and reported it, tried ring our local London camera exchange see if any body has tried to pawn it. No joy

I've got camera insurance but not sure if I'm covered against leaving it unattended

I hope you do get your lens returned or it does get paid out by the insurance, l am also sorry to hear about the petrol mistake.
The only thing that may be of consolation is that you have you have your full health ( I hope ) and that you not in a hospital bed in pain or suffering some illness.
Secondly you was not driving, down that highway when that plane came down yesterday. It may feel like a bad day, but some people and children have a bad day every day.
I wish you all the luck in getting your lens back.

Oh man that's one s***e awful day :( make sure you post on local items for sale/gossip Facebook pages in your area you might just find someone has picked it up and will happily return it (slim chance I know in this day and age but you do see it sometimes)

Especially if you offer a decent reward

Property Officers don't normally work at weekends. Any property just gets put in a cupboard until they are booked in. Also even good Samaritans may take a day or two to hand it in. Worth giving them another call at the end of the week.

I feel for ya... i would be absolutely destroyed, whether it was a £200 or £2000 lens it hurts the same. I hope it turns up, on the plus side you spotted the fuel mistake before it cost you even more money.

You may NOT babysit my child.

Done that myself, the fuel bit anyway and that really got me down. Hope you can track your lens down

Think that's the understatement...Hope you got your car sorted and fingers crossed the lens turns up.

I'd make sure when you next contact the police (if you haven't already) they log your details - it may help with your insurance claim...

I feel for you Graeme, last Saturday i left my Nikon D700 and lens behind on a walk in the woods.
Thought i had put everything in the car, but i must of left on the side or somewhere. I was honest with my Insurance company (Natwest) and now i'm just waiting for my money.

That's great news, did they challenge you on that you left it unattended being your fault. What did you tell them.

That's sad mate
I did the same a number of years ago at a wedding.
Left two flashguns and stands at a wedding in the pack up confusion.
Its a pig when it happens
Lets hope you sort it all soon

Do you have the serial number by any chance?
Yeah should have thinkit will be in the exif data
It probably won't, unfortunately.

Recent Canon DSLRs can write the lens serial number into the Exif data, but only if the lens supports that functionality. Most lenses don't - the serial number is stamped on the barrel, but not encoded into the firmware. Some newer high-end Canon lenses do, but if the gear list on your profile page is correct I think the only lens of yours which *might* do this is the 70-200mm f/2.8 Mk II.

Read the small print of the policy very carefully. You should be looking for a clause similar to this which I have in my policy:

"You are required to take, and cause to be taken, all reasonable precautions to avoid damage, loss or theft."

Anything like that means that you probably shouldn't be covered, because the insurance company could argue that picking up the lens and taking it with you would have been a reasonable precaution to avoid loss.

So if you're in that situation, you need to try to get them on your side. Explain the circumstances very carefully and in great detail. Explain how quickly you acted when you realised what you'd done. Explain the range of actions you've taken to try to recover it. With a bit of luck they might think that's enough to compensate for a moment of inattentiveness.

I've looked at my policy and there is not much detail if I'm honest just says all risks to the some of £x

Who is your cover with?

Also, does your insurance cover you for business use or is it just a household policy?

I would also look on Gumtree / eBay and pay a visit to a few local car boot sales in the next week or two.

One thing my claim was settled last Monday afternoon, how ever my money still hasn't hit my account :(
And every time i ring them i get told something different.

Really? There must be the usual page of exclusions, surely? Who's your insurer?
Who is your cover with?
Imaging Insurance. It's a highly specialised policy which extends cover to my hire customers too.

I feel your pain. I did something similar, I lost my 70-200 at a wedding venue and didn't realise until my next wedding - I simply assumed I'd packed it away at the end of the evening.

I hadn't and needless to say I never found it.

Fortunately my insurance replaced it within a week with a brand new one. I must say I was surprised as it was entirely my fault as I must have left it unattended at some point. It had been a long day and I was shattered by the end of the evening so I didn't even have a clue where exactly I left it.

The insurance company came up trumps though - superb service.

So there may be a happy ending for you, I hope so ;)

I would suggest contacting the police to report the item as lost in case some kind person has handed it in. It's unlikely but logging it with the police gives you a log number you can provide to the insurers.

I see you called them but did they log it? It might be worth another call in case it took someone some time to report it found!

Worst day ever? 3 years ago, I was told I had a brain tumour, how's that for a worse day? Thankfully it was 100% treatable (hence the 6th Sept being a VERY good day for me!) but the loss of a lens cannot be compared to a really bad day.

Doesn't stop me hoping that Graeme gets his lens replaced though.

If we are playing the black cat game, my friend kimmo was diagnosed with terminal leukemia and died just before xmas last year ...brain cancer - pah don't compare that to a really bad day
