I think i am the owner of the luckiest Canon 50mm 1.8 on the planet:lol:

Was shooting a group dinner shot from above in a hotel over the weekend...
Group on 3rd floor of the hotel me on an overlooking internal balcony on the 4th....

Ended up taking the shot with the 10-20 and had the nifty in my hand heading towards the spiral staircase to go back down...

Nifty, falls out of my hand and rolls towards the centre of spiral stair case :help:

I couldnt get to it in time and watched it fall 5 floors (4th to basement!) :'(

It lands on a large sofa convienently located directly below, bounces a good 5-6ft off the sofa, lands on it again and this time bounces nicely off onto a deep pile rug infront of the sofa :woot:

Stuck it back on the camera and continuted to use it the rest of the night, works perfectly still and not a bit of damage.:D

Thankfully there was no one on the sofa or i may have been up for man slaughter lol

Anyone else had any lucky escapes?

That'll take some beating for sure...

And, as you say, really fortunate the sofa was not in use or your no-clams... :suspect: ... may have taken a bashing... ;)

:p

The relief you must have felt after seeing it go over the edge to then peer over and see the soft landing :D

Oh boy, I feel for you. Glad it had a lucky escape. I dropped my 55-250 from about 5ft onto the kitchen floor. It bounced off the skirting board on the way down too. That was about 6 months ago and it's been fine ever since

everyone's lens horror stories are getting crazier all the time. Mate lucky it was your nifty and not something more expensive :p

........thats MoreThan lucky (sorry!) :coat:

my only lucky escape to date was forgetting my bag was open when I picked it up of my desk at work, just in time to see my canon 70-300mm and 17-85mm hurtle towards the floor, 2 lens hoods and a lens flying everywhere. with large gulp picked them up, amazingly no rattles, or cracks etc. used ever since without issue.

Did you not get a picture of the sofa?? :D

Im actually not sure ill have to check lol! Think i might have taken one straight after putting the lens back on to see it worked.

I was very lucky indeed....bit of strange feeling watching it fall that height! I was waiting on a large smash of plastic going everywhere but was pleastly suprised by the dull thud

Wow, sounds like your as jammy as jammy the badger in a jam factory. Impressive, although some peoples kit has survived falling off the back of a lorry... (Not mine I hasten to add!)

That was lucky! I too have one of those Canon lenses and wouldn't value it's chances if it had hit the rug first :(.

That said, my Nikon's "nifty fifty" is the Sigma f1.4 EX DG. If this thing fell on a sofa from 5 floors up, it'd probably go straight through it  ...

times like those you need a video camera attached to your camera for the "ohmygodareyouserious" moments

my worst story is having my orion trekker open and on the ground whilst shooting some skiers at a dry slope with a freind. Im must have nudged the bag as my friend yelled my name whilst pointed and in shock horror my sigma 70-300 was rolling down the slope bouncing on the simulated snow surface.

There where snowboaders dodging it as it went all the way to the bottom, at which point i wanted to turn away as i started to fill ill, but had to watch to see what happened.

I watched as it bounced one last time and slammed into the crash mats at the bottom, one of the boarders came up on the drag lifts that were right next to me and handed it to me, still with cap on which was a surprise, I mounted it to the camera and it was still focussing correctly.

I never left the bag open again. Lesson learnt in my books

Thompo, I think I have your Fifty's unlucky brother - lent it to my boss for a shoot the next day and found it in a drawer of his old desk the other day, looking like he's rubbed the lens with sandpaper.... and this is five years later! I've moved to Nikon since then so now I have 50mm bookend :)

Ive had worse/better!

I was in Poland (me being half polish, visiting relatives)! I managed to find my way into one of those old communist "bloks" (those horrid concrete boxes full of dingy flats) I was allowed into one of the flats that was empty, between occupants and I was tring to get a landscape of the surrounding blocks from the balcony....

well, I had the whole camera bag, couple of lenses, my spare body, flash, all stupidly slinged on my shoulder. as i bent down to get a shot, it all fell! AAAH! 5 floors downwards with a concrete floor below! somehow, with god on my side, the strap of the bag got cought on a washing-line with an incredibly luckily placed t-shirt! the bag stoped an inch or two above the ground! all was fine! but i swear, i was about to jump out of that damn balcony to catch it!

thats not the worst bit! it hapened again a week later when I was hiking, up in the pieniny mountains in poland, there is a peak, with a lone tree/large shrub hanging off the top of the cliff, with a few hundred metre drop into rocks and water below!

Similar thing happened, because the point you can stand at is above the tree on a small incline! I placed the camera bag on the floor, whilst taking a photo of my old man, I accidentaly "gently shoved" the bag with my foot! Down the small hill it rolled, almost over the edge! But it got hooked on a root that was sticking out!

AAAGH! i wasn't going to jump off a cliff to get the stuff! But alot of people get their pic taken holding/touching the tree (Its a "national icon/treasure" so people like the shot!)

I had to lay on my stomach, and have my head poking out looking down!

A lesson leaned: I am unlucky, Tie my gear to me, dont go to high spots with my gear!

LOL!

When I got back, I made sure all my stuff was insured!

Though I don't think "accidental cliff-drop coverage" would be included in many policies

bloody scary!

the second one works! Thinking back, it wasn't that bad. Seing that when your up there there is a queue to do what I did, FOR FUN!

eek. some strange people you get in poland....
