Yes
I got a lucky escape this weekend, My GF's mother and her partner announced they were getting remarried

For about 10 mins I thought I was going to get asked to do the photography and started wondering how I was going to say NO! Fortunately I was very rapidly put out of my misery when they said that they thought about it and would like me in the photos, so they are getting someone else :woot:

I have no problem doing weddings and have done one or two ;) I have insurance to cover most worst case scenarios but I don't think the additional pressure of shooting Family and Friends is for me :D. I don't think my insurance can pay for spoiling the potential mother-in-law's wedding photos

Your right that is a lucky escape. Having done my fair share of wedding, doing a wedding for the family would have pushed my over the edge, again.

Well.....I'm disgusted
Surely you could get somebody else to shoot the odd couple of shots you're meant to appear in.
I think its a bit tight not to offer to shoot your in-laws wedding bash for a slice of wedding cake and a bouquet.
Ring them up this minute...

alternatively, stick pins in your eyes.....that's what I do, feign injury with realism

:D

I've done tons of weddings, mostly without a hitch, but that one would have had me running scared!

Pressure or what?

So who they getting:suspect:

Im round your way ish

good chance to get to know the competition

Indeed you are and I agree it's always good to know the competition. I did offer to help find someone but they do know another pro tog so they are going to ask them.

However, you are welcome to PM me your details and I'll pass them on (I don't think the chap they want to use is much cop)

I shot my cousin's Wedding when I was 15 - back in the film days when you couldn't 'check' the screen to see if you'd got a decent shot/exposure; at a venue I'd never been to before; with 80 people I didn't know (mostly other family members!); and I handed the camera to a passerby for the group shot I needed to be in

It's not that stressful !!!

But yes, if you can get out of it so you too can enjoy your family's day, then all the better

Now you are free to capture brilliant candids of the day instead - or just get p***ed

:)

I know it wouldn't be that stressful DD but I ask anyone who pops on here saying they've been asked to do a wedding by a relative / friend is how would they feel and could the relationship survive if they mess up. So I've done the same and whilst I know I have the skills and abilities to do a really great job and the risk of failing to deliver is very small (especially with the work flow and the backups I have), in this case if I something went wrong I don't think I would be able to look my GF (let alone her mother) in the face again so that was one road I was not going down. As I said there are some things that insurance can't pay for :)

As for whether I'll take a camera on the day, we'll see if I'm allowed first  I do have this habit of getting rather focused on the togging and not relaxing.

Not suggesting for a sec that you should do it m8 - but many fear this 'What if' meaning if they cock it up - but ask yourself (all) this...

How many times have you ever been on a day's shoot and lost your pics? Or in some other way cocked everything up?

I've had the odd off day I guess, once had exp comp set to +1 for an hour with a new camera before I realsed - but never a disaster in 30 years of photography. It's not an irrational fear, far from it, but it is overplayed I feel

As I say though - you shouldn't do family Weddings as you can't enjoy them the same
