Luminance noise SB700

I own a Nikon D3000. A friend of mine loaned me a SB700 speedlight for taking some indoor photographs of my toddler. I set the speedlight away in TTL mode and bounced the flash into the room. Most photos were shot with an ISO 400, some with ISO 800. Even though the speedlight has definitely exposed the images correctly, I noticed that there is a lot of luminance noise in the images. I have had the speedlight for about a week, and took photos during the day and at night under tungsten lighting. What is common to all these photos are the amount of luminance noise. I have been thinking about buying a speedlight, maybe a second hand SB 600 or SB 400, to shoot with the flash bounced. Can I always expect such noisy images, or is there a way to reduce the amount of noise in the images by shooting some other way? I could reduce the ISO to 200, but a couple of sample shots showed that even though there is a slight element of reduced noise, it is still noisy enough. Certainly much more noisy than if I shot in daylight for example. What am I doing wrong?

Flash makes no difference to noise, but under-exposure does. And you usually get some darker background areas with flash that will inevitably have more noise in them than the foreground, as the light falls off quite rapidly.

Expose correctly, as generously as you dare, and get good and even light coverage, noise goes away.
