Lying face down in some mud photographing mushrooms......

I decided to go up Beacon Fell this weekend as it was quite misty, overcast and dull, and I was hoping to catch the mood as it looks as though Autumn is officially here.

After walking around there for 4hrs capturing nothing particularly special, other than some blair witch style misty trees, I came across a fantastic little tree stump absolutely covered in mushrooms down in a ditch running adjacent to the woodchip path.
I wanted to make the most of it, so really thought about which angle to attack it from, what type of DoF I wanted, etc etc

Anyway, I ended up deciding that the best AOA was from the side away from the path, so set myself and my kit up accordingly and lay down in the mud ready to get some shots, when suddenly I hear a voice "are you alright, what are you doing?"

At this point I kind of realised that it must have looked pretty weird, I was off the beaten track, about 10ft below the path in a sort of ditch lying on my front face down, my camera bag was somewhere behind me, and there was a thin layer of mist covering me - tbh Im surprised he saw me!!
I got up and an oldish man was there, walking his dog - which was also looking at me with an air of confusion, and began to growl as I emerged from the mist.
After telling him what I was doing he became very interested and said he hadn't noticed the mushrooms and promptly told me he had a 7D but wasn't happy with it, and that his old 5Dmk1 was taking better pictures than it.

We had a great little chat about cameras, and he was very interested in my Mk2 and I think I may have just contributed to the sale of a new one from Wilkinson cameras! haha.

Anyway, he was especially interested in my off camera flash setup, he was genuinely fascinated by it all! He handed me a notepad and pen and asked me to write down exactly what I was using as he wanted to have the same setup (nothing fancy in this instance, I just had my Yongnuo setup!) After demonstrating it a few times to him, and showing him how easy to use it was he was sold!

About 15 minutes later we parted company and he definitely left with the intention of buying a 5Dmk2, and it left me feeling like I'd entertained him at the least!

Ps - the mushroom shots are still to be processed but will be added in due course :)

Made me wonder what other funny situations others have been in, when someone has seen you and asked WTF you are doing lol ?

Reminds me of the time I was caught flat on my belly in the countryside by a couple walking the dog. Happily, he knew what was going on, and said, "You should get some good captures with that."
(This was back in the day when a D200 was respected kit.)

The subject was a bee fly visiting primroses. If I'd known how few were going to turn out, I would have taken more time. I think I would do better today, even with the D200.

I often wonder what people make of it when my friend Sue and I are out walking the dogs. I'm normally seen with muddy knees and elbows where I've been laying down photographing insects or fungi.

I remember being out with camera club and there were about 5 of us lying in a semi circle round some toadstools- I'm sure it must have looked odd to any passers by!

I do sometimes get funny looks, you get so caught up in the photograph you forget you're lying on a path/field/beach.

My OH thinks its hilarious when I start lying on the ground to get a shot, and usually takes a pic of my on his iPhone to put up on FB...

Several replies came to mind then Mike,:naughty:
Then I remembered that some youngsters come here so I'll leave it to others to think about.................:p

Sounds like you had a good time yourself Nick, I bet he got a lot of very useful advice and was glad he took the time to check you were okay - although what was going through his mind seeing you lying there initially ...
