I got one of these recently after the price fell (again) mostly out of curiosity but also because of a potential commercial use for it.
I had heard that the *real* resolution wasn't that high even though the system claims to export 4 megapixel JPEG images.
So I did some analysis and research into this - seems no-one has actually calculated the *real* maximum output resolution of the camera before.
Long story short, the camera uses a 40 megapixel 1" sensor with an array of microlenses on top which generate little images 10x10 pixel images for each microlens. Each of these images is then essentially one pixel in your output image as each lens stores the results for the light landing on a single pixel (ie the microlens) from multiple angles.
Therefore the actual maximum *sharp* uninterpolated resolution of the Lytro Illum would appear to work out at 816 x 544 pixels, or just 0.4 megapixels.
It does mean that if you do want to get a TRUE 4 megapixel image out of a similar light field camera you'd need 400 megapixel sensor.
No doubt this is why Lytro kept the true resolution quiet for so long.
