Well not a problem so to speak but I recently bought a helios 44M 58mm f/2 M42
and an m42 adapter for my nikon d60, when I attached the lens a message appeared on my d60 telling me that the lens was not attached now im not sure if this is suppose to happen or not. Also it on lets me take photos on the M setting on the dial.
Can any help me out with some info please :D

I have not got a Nikon but i think you have to go into the menu and there should be a setting that will let you take pics without a lens attached. This is what Canon have. Have a smooch round your menu.

The D60 has a little black tab to the right bottom of the lens mount as you are looking through the viewfinder. If you can hold that tab in with something (bluetac) etc the warning will go away.

You can only shoot in "M" mode with this lens, that's normal.

HTH

D60 doesn't have that setting. No Nikon bodies have it.

When using M42 mounts on my canon it just says f00, haven't tried it in full auto tbh, never touch the setting. I say keep on manual and just use the meter, adjust as you see fit (I say this as one of my M42 lenses comes out quite dark compared to a Canon lens.)

My Canon also works pretty well with full manual lenses in aperture priority too. If you twiddle the aperture ring it picks up on the lack of light coming through the lens and alters the shutter speed accordingly - and is pretty damn accurate too.

I don't really use my m42 lenses though because they're ancient and quality is just not up to modern standards.

They are better built in most cases and a 55mm Super Takamer f/1.4 or f/1.8 can easily match any modern 50mm f/1.8 AF.

Don't let the facts stand in the way of a good soundbite mind you ;)

Perhaps my judgement was a bit premature. Indeed they are well built - I've got three m42 lenses and all are solid hunks of metal with a large chunk of glass or two in between; but, its clear by looking through the lenses that they don't have nearly as many coatings and such as modern offerings. Pictures taken through them have vastly less contrast than even my 18-55 IS kit lens, although my Pentax Lydith 30mm f/3.5 is razor sharp.
