Yes
I have some Sony DVD's and when I try to burn stuff onto them I get a warning message near the end of the burn informing me the disc may not play as it can't be finished. Most of them play no problem but c.d.'s are another matter. Most of the time the macbook wont even recognise them let alone let me record onto to them.

Any ideas any body?

First of all try some CD/DVD's of another brand, such as Verbatim. If you get the same problem, it may be the drive. I had a similar problem with a Dell some years ago, only it was the DVD's that gave trouble. Replacing the drive cured the problem.

If you have access to an external drive see if you get the same result.

to copy Dvds for purely backup purposes off course you need to do these steps;
1- Use MacTheRipper
2- DVD2OneX
3- DVD Imager.
4- Burn the image in Disk utility.
Steps 1-3 are apps that can be downloaded from the internet. Although DVD2Onex you have to purchase.
