Backing up your Mac..............I am very thorough with backing up data, time machine and manual backups etc.

But last week I discovered that if you have a macbook pro with a ssd and you allow the battery to run flat you could lose all your software as I did.

I have recovered the hard drive, reformatted it and loaded on the operating software and other programs etc.

Before I start putting data on I am wondering what is the best way of making a backup of the mac as it is now so if this happens again I can just recover it in one swift maneuver.

Any ideas ideas people?
 
Try Carbon Copy Cloner or similar. This will make a duplicate of you hard drive. onto an external unit. You can even make this external drive bootable.

As you are using Time Machine you could also use the "Restore from Time machine " option when reinstalling the OS

I'd also take up this problem with Apple support as losing data from an SSD when the battery goes flat sound very odd.
 
I'd definitely take it up with apple. There are two types of SSD. Flash SSD which keeps data no matter what and RAM ssd which will lose it without power.
 
If you ignore the message about the battery going and keep using it you can get it to very low but it shuts off before the battery is actually flat BUT the SSD is a flash drive and the computer's battery running flat wouldn't affect it unless it went flat whilst writing to the main catalogue sectors and corrupted it. Thing is that that shouldn't happen as explained above. I think that something happened coincidentally. I would speak to Apple about it but I've never heard of this happening.
 
Thanks for the comments and yes carbon copy looks like the business.

There is a potential issue especially with some Macbooks with third party ssds. Not quite got to the bottom of it yet but it is a known issue.

Agreed. I don't think the battery running flat is the cause, but something else that happened at the same time.
