Hi all, What would you reccommend as a good general lens for marco and landscapes? I was thinking the nifty 50 but wanted to know anyone elses thoughts. For Canon by the way

so what would you use the 50 for then? what size would you reccommend?

The 50mm would be a great lens fr experimenting with shallow DoF and getting used to working with primes; they normally lead to thinking about the shot a lot more and taking more time to compose it as you don't have the versatility of a zoom.

Gav,

Trying to do this with one lens is going to end up with a compromise that'll perform neither function very well.

My advice would be to start off with a set of EF-S compatible extension tubes to use with your EF-S18-55 (your signature is showing 15-55 by the way). You'll have to be a bit creative with the focussing for macro but re-assigning the focus button and then moving your position to focus should work. Other than that, you're looking at needing two distinctly different lenses.

The 5omm would make a good portrait or general purpose lens, especially good in low light because of the wide aperture, but not really much good for macro unless used with extension tubes maybe. Always best to use an actual macro lens where possible, something like the Sigma 105 or the Tamron 90 would be my recommendations.

As for landscapes well yes, you could use the 50mm but it would be very limiting, especially with a cropped sensor. I would more likely be thinking of a focal range between 10mm and 24mm so probably the Sigma 10-20 or any decent standard zoom lens.

So to answer your original question, Ideally there isn't really a single lens that is good for both macro and landscape, they are essentially different ends of the spectrum.

They are also very good for portrait type work.

for the macro, my choice is the Nikon 105mm VR lens... landscape specific, not sure, I am sure someone else will be along soon.

Thanks for the replys guys. I never noticed my sig lol. Will have a look around on iternet later then. Off to work now. Thanks again
