I'm a beginner to photography and am looking at a new lens I have a canon 500d with standard lens any suggestions
 
Thanks for the help I've saved about £500 for it, I like wildlife sorta things like I said I'm a beginner so don't wanna narrow my field of photography just yet

That doesn't really tie in with your question about a macro lens, which is pretty specialised, though obviously they can be used for photography other than macro, unless you buy the MPE65.
 
Well in time obviously I will have a collection of lenses they were just the first lenses I was looking at I understand what your saying yet, what lenses are essentials for begginers then and accessories

Ive been looking at the one to be honest was just after help tho as theres so much stuff out there it's ridiculous, thanks for the help
 
I have the canon 100mm f2.8 usm version and it is as good as the L version but slightly cheaper,

May I also throw the Sigma 150mm 2.8 into the mix. It's meant to be a peach (I have the 180mm Sigma but its discontinues) and has a usefully more length than the others being mentioned. In the world of Macro this won't mean that you can make your subjects any larger but it will mean that you'll be further away from them when you take the shot. If we're talking about wildlife, this may be the difference between scaring your subject away or not. It also may mean that you don't block light sources etc...

Downsides, it's a big old beast to carry around.
 
Have you factored in any flash? I ask as I have a Canon 100mm/2.8 macro. I always thought the macro results were a little ............. dull. It wasn't until I got a 430EX II flash and velcroed it to the hood of the lens, that my macro photography changed. It was much more vibrant and well worth every penny. I would definately suggest getting a flash as well. If you got a Sigma 105mm, Tamron 90mm or Canon 100mm for example, you will be able to get flash too within your £500 budget.

Try some AF ext tubes and a 50mm cheap as chips and two lens in one,
