My wife wants to explore the macro side of photography as she need to take better pictures of her cakes (She makes wedding cakes).

We have a Canon 450D

What are our options please.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure you want macro? This will give you close up shots of components on the cake. If you want macro capability with a lens that will take some good shots of the whole cake look at the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.

To make the most of the cakes you're also going to want some form of lighting set up.

Yeah deffo macro, need to take close up's of the detail on the cakes as some of the flowers can be 5mm across.

Ive heard of tubes, rings and of course lenses but dont really know whats best, bearing in mind we dont want to spend hundreds £s

just quickly as im on my way to work

Tamron 28-200mm

Canon 18-55mm

Canon 17-85mm

The Tamron 90mm macro lens is a very good choice if the 100mm Canon is too expensive. If you've already got a prime lens in the 50 - 100mm range then you could use extension tubes as a sensible solution. Yes, you could also mess about with a 50mm on a reversing ring or dioptre lenses but it's much simpler to buy a modestly priced macro lens and just get on with taking photos. If you're doing it for work, keep things as simple and straightforward as possible and leave the 'fudges' for the enthusiasts who have the time for them.

Get some tubes (non af for a tenner af for around 50-70ukp?)
Have a look at raynox 250 on amazon around 40ukp for the 200mm end of the zoom?

EF-S 60mm macro would be my choice, shorter focal length than the 100mm so easier to get the whole cake in the frame if needed. 1:1 macro for the details and a useful focal length for portraits on a crop body. All of the macro lenses are very good though.

Don't overlook the lighting side of things as well - that will be more important than the lens choice.

Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro lens- superb bit of kit ( I know, I use one)

Les
