Macs

I currently have a cheap webbook which is great for browsing the net but I'm looking to upgrade to something better that i can do some photo and video editing on and that doesn't crash everytime you do more than 2 things at once!!!

I've been looking at building myself a good desktop pc but have also been toying with the idea of getting a Mac (not sure which though).

I find the world of Mac a little baffling but love most things from apple...ipod, itunes, safari...I'm just wandering if it's worth spending the extra money for a mac...

What's the deal with them and what's so great about them...please enlighten me to the world of Mac good and bad?!

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to do a search, because this thread's only going to go one way from here.

I switched to Macs in 2007, curisoity more than anything... Kinda liked it so bought a Mac Pro although considering the cost I had my works computer beating it at Lr work.

Switched back to PCs a few weeks ago, very happy with the performance of Photoshop and Lightroom now.

You can specify how much RAM you want Ps to use in Windows and could do since Photoshop 7 (probably before but that's the first one I used). Unless you have a Quadro card or GTX285 in your Mac Pro, Ps won't run any smoother than a normal PC either.

Try one out at an Apple store and see how you get on and if you don't like it you can always run Windows on it like I did for a while with mine. :)

Stock answer to this question - "If you don't know, then you are not ready!"

Yes, Yes, Yes!!!

My dad went to a Mac a year or so ago and would not dream of going back. Everyone I have spoken to who has gone to Mac has stayed. There are a lot of Mac fanboys and Mac haters out there. I use a Mac for me and a Windows laptop for my day job, and the Windows laptop crashes and makes me go 'Aaaarrgghhh' more times in a week than the Mac does in a year!

I got a Mac a couple of years ago when I had a bit of cash to spend. It's nice but if I was on a budget I wouldn't buy a Mac again; you can get a more than adequate PC for 50-60% of the price. Performance on modern PCs is good and at the end of the day it's just a tool.

Both do the same job well, one costs less, the other looks great on your desktop.

That said I find a mac much easier to use for some reason, but I say that not having used the recent Windows 7 or whatever it's called.

I have a MacBook pro, and will be getting a new iMac next week. With the student offers you can pick up the base 21.5 for about 730. You would strggle to find a Pc with the same spec and quality monitor for that. I loved my pc's, but macs are just easier and get on with it.

Go and try one out.

Depends on the job you want to do.

I have a complete photography-cum-web/database development environment on my MacBook Pro with Unix command line under the hood (the Terminal stays open 95% of the time) and Windows, Linux and BSD on call in virtual machines when I need them.

And it looks great on my desktop :)

when i get home later i'll post a photo of my pc setup, certainly not shabby and no cables everywhere.

in answer to the OP, neither mac or windows based pc does the job any better. theyre the same hardware architecture, they both have an operating system that does the same thing (just look slightly different), BOTH can crash just as much as each other.. etc etc etc.

:lock:

if you are unsure about Macs the best thing to do is pop to (if you have a local one) Apple store, or even PC World, they have macs in that you can have a look around

please, Please, PLEASE, PUH-LEASE!

This is getting silly now, we need one big thread where people can rant about it til the end of time.

Oh, I want to join in!

For photo editing etc y you will notice no difference between a mac and a PC. They do the same job and a modern W7 computer will be as good as a mac. However, the 27" quad core i5 iMac is a bloody bargain because of the superb screen and decent computer innards. Have a go on OSX to see if you like it, its not too different from W7 and some people do prefer it. Its all about what you prefer and can afford. You can afford (usually!) more from a W7 PC but note the exception above!

You see, it is possible to post sensibly in these and really not become irrationally attached to one platform or another. Or not live up Steve Job's bum and still like apple products!

;)

Last Apple Computer I owned was a Apple 2e in the early 80s, but the screen on the 27" iMac pulled me in,

Love the machine, but hate the OS (Once a Pc'r etc), anyway was going to return it, but in the end installed Win7 64 bit on it using Bootcamp (Have the 1Tb version) so a 500Gb Win7 Partition and a 500Gb OSX Partition,

Spends 90% of its time booted in Win7 mode now, so have the benefit of my favorite OS and also the superb screen for editing, there is just nothing out there on the PC to compare screen wise, and its got the grunt ot run CS5 and LR well .

I love my MacBook. As soon as I can afford it, I want to get an iMac.

depends if you like looking at a mirror glossy screen, but id disagree that there is nothing comparible. IPS screens are available readily and supurb.

I Agree, Yes there are, and some are superb, Like the Dell 27" which has exactly the same Res as the 27" iMac, but it cost's £938 just for the monitor. Which makes the 27" iMac a bit of a deal at about £1350 for the i5 Quadcore from the Apple Outlet store.

Don't get me wrong I am no apple fanboy. I would much prefer to have a PC, you just cant mess around with the guts of an iMac the way you can with a PC and it does concern me if things go wrong once the warranty has expired, but cost/looks for £ I could not find a PC to come close and I really have looked.

does that moreso tell you something about the apple display if alternate panels are so costly :p

if this thread stays unlocked long enough i'll try and get a pic of my tidy PC setup posted tonight..

Here's my desk, I'd say its super tidy.

No cables visible anywhere, except behind the amp which can't really be helped.

The Apple displays are known to be high quality, and if you could spec a PC with a 27" screen and better spec for the same cash I would be very surprised.

The problem I find with PC (and I know there are some very nice looking ones) is the fact of a base unit as well as a monitor.

Actually, to be more specific, the problem is speccing a 27" monitor and keeping it in the budget. If you went for a 24" IPS you would do it a lot cheaper!

I've opened a can of worms here!!!

Thanks for the input people...I shall be making a trip down to the apple store to check some out.
