The assignment em@il read…

Servus Daniel,
Three weeks ago, you have lost this assignment to your competition
mainly because your price was too high.

We tried two sessions with them but both failed… so we are back to
you and at your price. Delivery: latest September 14, 14:00

THE TASK
  1. A woman that looks like a woman and not a doll.
  2. That would be there because her nose and pleasure
and not for her smile and hairstyle.
  3. A mature woman that is not a teenager Wine Queen
THE THEME
  1. Basic three colour composition
  2. Emphasis on olfactive relation to product
  3. Autumn shades… and no gadgets
What do you say of this…

Personally I'd say that the shot is incredibly tight for a magazine cover and that the left orientation is unusual.

What do you say of this…
1. Google translation is not very good but given I can understand your brief, it works.
2. Are you asking for feedback or ideas to make it better? :)

The picture meets the brief !!!

If you want to be very particular
- I would like to see more of the hand holding the glass (which may end up in a hand with no arm holding a glass which is not good either).
- I am not keen on hair that should have been dyed 2-3 months ago (roots showing a different colour to the rest), but if this is fashion what can I say?

Pinching what DemiLion says, looking to the right would be more natural.

Finally I prefer red to white wine and I am having some.

As I know the magazine team of publishers and
graphists, the key words here are: "her nose and
pleasure"
. I created a small triangular area that
goes from the eyes, the lips and the bottom of the
glass that should not be covered by anything so to
keep the message clean: the rest is fair game.

the left orientation is unusual.
The tasks list says nothing about orientation. Since
there are no visible specific markers, the shot may
be flipped horizontally to the publisher's liking.

Example…

Thanks for your comment, Charles!

Google translation is not very good
Yeah, I know. It got me in trouble a few times but…
thanks to the generosity of dudes like you, not too often
Are you asking for feedback or ideas to make it better?
Not really as the session is done, the model paid and
the picture goes in PP tomorrow. Feedback is cool always
too late for the rest.

@DemiLion
Of course, the frame is larger but I would not submit it
unless I know it is accepted… they know me!

Good on you! I hope the picture is used.

I will refill my Ikea glass :police:

I use to prefer French reds too… but now that I
discovered the local whites from south Styria and
north of SlovenijaI prefer to have the 2 at home.

Outside of my area of 'expertise' but it looks to perfectly fit the brief ... however they don't seem to be disputing that, only the price.

we are back to you and at your price.

'morning and thanks Roger!
they don't seem to be disputing that, only the price.
The only chance one can beat competition sometimes
is the use of the ultimate argument: lower price. A game
I don't play.

If they are back after loosing the pre-press production time,
that means I have less time and that makes my fee what it is.

It fills the brief and I am pleased you have been paid.
Should she have powdered her nose?

Caught the moment really well there, can almost hear the sniff!

I will know to night if they take it… then I will be paid.

Her nose? Nah, not really… they wanted a simple matured look.
I was unpleased with the black line on her eyelids though but this
can be retouched!

Thanks, Peter!

That model has a TV show every morning in the capital.
She is used to cameras, lives near by and I love the way
she dresses… was an easy choice as she loves wine too!

I agree that it's too tight... IMO it's better to give them some options on the composition/cropping rather than forcing the layout (yes, I saw your example). I think it feels like she's a little "hunched over," a looser composition would allow it to be rotated a bit more upright. Additionally, most magazines are not in a 2:3 aspect... this composition would liely force them to crop down into the hairline and remove some of the space allocated for copy.
I realize they noted it not being about "smile and hairdo," but I think it could be a little "happier." The image seems to convey more of the "critical evaluation" (smelling) of the wine and I think a little more "happy result" would work better (a little more smile in the lips/eyes).
I assume you are submitting a few variations.

IMO, the important aspect of the image is the diagonal line created by the hand/stem/glass/nose/hair part (not "the triangle"), and I think a composition more like this would work better...

I really want to like it.. but there are lots of little things that would bug me if it was mine.
  • I'm totally with @sk66 on the composition. She's squashed very low in the frame. Combined with the lighting it looks like it could be all about the hair.
  • It's significantly underexposed for the intended usage, I reckon
  • I don't like the little bit of hand visible at the bottom
  • I always find strong green tones next to faces a bit problematic. I'd tweak the colours just a little. That would also give it more of an Autumnal feel.
  • I don't really like the position of the highlight on the glass. It really draws attention to the nose. I suppose that's in the brief, but..
  • The glass seems sharper than her eyes. I think that's an illusion, but it's an odd one.
  • I'd do a bit more skin & hair work.. but we've chatted about retouching before
  • I'm not totally sold on the lighting. She's broad lit but there are some odd highlights on the short side.
As I said, they're all little things, it's only when added together they start to become problematic.

Thank you both, gentlemen!

The good news today was that the cover I
proposed was accepted and appreciated
even more that they got it on time! :)
Well done Daniel :)

@doggel

•Thank you Sir.

@sk66
When the shot is released properly, they have
two heads in the editing & layout room and can
do what they want to fit their needs!

Fascinating for me as a total amateur to see a customer brief and tje resulting image.

Looks to me like you ticked all the boxes. I also like the way her hair curves around the main focal points of the glass and her nose.

Also impressed by how the model fits the brief. Good choice.

Good choice.

Thank you!

A photographer has to have a bank of models,
locations — and what not— that may be used
when needed.

A good way to ease the access to these "re-
sources" is to make sure that the gratifications
are right for everyone. This TV personality has
all the professional qualities of a model, the un-
derstanding of the media and, on a very perso-
nal note, she is the kind of woman…

She ticks a lot of boxes.
Some one well known to the readers is as good as an endorsement for any magasine.
