I am fairly new to photography,I would like to try some close up shooting.I have a Nikon D5000 kit,18mm-55mm and 55mm -200mm lens. What would be a good diopter set to start with. I would like to start with diopters before buying expensive macro lens. Thanks fo any info.

Consider extension tubes, James.

Very, very much cheaper than a macro lens.
Unlike supplementary close up lenses they cause zero loss of image quality.

Depends how close you want to go. For general stuff like flowers, then maybe something like a Hoya +3 close-up lens will do the trick, getting closer the Raynox DCR-150 and very close the stronger DCR-250.

Raynox works well with tele-zooms like you 55-200. A few sample pics here http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/

Something of a bargain at £36 from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Raynox-RADCR-0250-DCR-250/dp/B000A1SZ2Y
