Mailing a camera

I just sold my D40, I have it all packed up to go. What's the best service to use to mail it that will cover me up to £150 insured? I tried parcels to go but they say a camera is fragile and won't cover it for insurance purposes

always taken mine down to the post office and they have never had a problem

Yes, it's just the weight. The D40 is pretty light, so taking into account all the packaging you'll probably looking at about 1kg?

If it costs that little bit extra to ensure that the goods are extra safe and sound, then it will be worth it in the long run. I used far too much bubble wrap for something I sent off relatively recently, but it was peace of mind for me and the person who bought it off me - you can never account for how it's going to be handled during transit, so you might as well do the best you possibly can to mitigate any risk of damage.

Its annoying when you just go over 2kg by a gram or 2 as then its in the £20 price bracket :gag:

I've done it before when forgot to ad the label etc :$

I did that once... Spent the next 10 minutes peeling off several layers of parcel tape to get the weight down..

I have opened it up taken the instructions books out and sent them seperate by recorded delivery before when its gone over 2kg

£9ish to £24ish, hell of a difference when an instruction book pack can be a big chunk of the weight!
 
I posted a camera recently, 1st class, no insurance, £3.71.

What post service was it?
How much did it weigh?
Where did you post it to?

Your post doesn't reach the criteria necessary.

I sent a Sony a200 DSLR by post office RMSD and I believe it cost me around £22 or something like that, and it was full and I had to use as little packaging as possible to not go over the threshold. It arrived next day and that was sending from Tamworth to London.

Its not being tight - its being sensible as for the sake of 2 grammes a £9.06 2kg parcel then can then shoot to a whopping £22.70 for one weighing 2.01kg...

I'm there as well stripping anything right down even to the amount of tape I use :lol:
 
As little packaging as possible??? :bang:

The camera should be sealed in polythene or bubble-wrap to keep out the dust; placed in its box or another with void-fill; seal that box in a bag and place in a larger, double-wall box with good quality void-fill at least 10cm all round.

When I've sold my cameras on the internet I've always sent them fully insured and tracked. I can't afford to sell the camera, pay the fees then have the posty drop it or lose it. Then I have to pay for any repair or refund out of my own pocket. Sending cameras uninsured saves you money till Royal Mail's finest posty loses it.

I think buyers value tracked and insured postage. I don't send anything any other way when it comes to selling online.
 
I sold my d60 earlier in the year. Body only, charger all cds and instructions. Well packed with bubble wrap and wrapped the outside of the box with bubble wrap and a couple of black bags for good measure.
Sent via rmsd for the cheaper price wouldn't have it any other way.

No criteria for a good answer or what the OP would consider a good answer, he asked a question with multiple little criteria's and it's our job when we make a comment that we reach those criteria's so they can have the answer they want.

As for the Tamworth to London bit, that was to say where it was sent to so I could detail time, it's better than not saying it and for all we know it could have been sent to spain for next day delivery.

If you had less than 100 posts then I would instantly assume you we're getting your post count up and most likely you still could be but once you've had your say (if it's a good say anyway) and then move aside for others to make their opinion. there's nothing anal about it.
 
You might aswell choose £500 all the time, it doesnt cost extra.
I would have thought that was a nono, but my usual post office guy said it was fine and he has always put the insurance at the highest value.
 
Guy I used to work with did that, parcel got lost, he claimed the full compensation at the time. Few months later it was found opened and value of the item was discovered to be a small percentage of the claimed value.
We were working for a government dept and he caught hell from the managers and had a written warning entered into his personal file.
