Major Problem - Need help quick! (IRC Members may know about this)

Hi guys,

Managed to destroy my computer, the fellas on IRC might have heard about me attempting to fix some viruses, well i tried to delete them and i thought i had but then i restarted the computer and the start bar has gone and so have all the icons. I went onto task manager then went to the RUN bit and type in explorer.exe and it doesnt make a difference, i've copied a copy of explorer.exe from a laptop and stuck it in the c-drive and hasnt made any difference.

I really need some help as this computer is pretty much out of action

for some reason in the run bit i could go onto websites... hence i am on here

If you are on XP or Vista sometimes booting from the install disc will allow you to repair windows, from the installation menu. This copies over all the necessary files again...although it depends on the problem you are having as to whether or not it'll fix it!
 
i had same issue a little while back, i ended up uninstalling my antivirus, restore lappy back as far as i could, then reinstalled antivirus , scanned and deleted trojan virus, the virus seems to get hold of IE and stops it from operating but even if you go into regedit and delete where it has attached itself onto in the windows reg files it always reinstalls itself. you need to restore back before the corrupt file gets activated and delete its launch into the registry. the virus attacks "software/microsoft/windows/current version"

but then again...is your virus the same as mine. who can say???
 
There is also the recovery console, but it takes a fairly proficient user.

Also, take a look at dw.exe (Dr Watson), you may be lucky enough to get a readable report which would enable you to either fix from disk or recovery console.
 
Further, many of the more recent viruses and trojans actually run as a service, so simply allowing your av prog to kill them doesnt work. You really need to nail down exactly what you have and do some research. Usually, it entails going into the management console and stopping or disabling the affected service from running, before you attempt to clean house.
