I have the below image of my pup which i quite like however the background isnt quite black. I shot it on an old piece of black material i had lying around. I would like to use the pic for a family calander but would prefer to get the blacks properly black before doing so.Could someone give me an idea on how to go about it, i have CS4 but im still learning with it at the moment.

On some screens it does look black and on others its lighter and you can see the creases in the material etc

Hi Mark, try image-adjustments-selective colour- choose black and move slider to about +16.
I am also not too experienced at CS4, but it seems to work. :D

Kev.

just click on levels and the the black colour picker and click on a area you would like black

Personally, i think you should leave it.
You run the risk of making the dog levatate
It's a cute picture but has little 'context' as it is

Plus one to all the above, and also I gotta say, :) cracking capture :) really love the photo! :)

Double that layer,
Top layer open up curves,
Darken it so background is fairly black but your puppy is not lost,
Click magic wand on the black,
Now get the brush and paint it black.

If its leaving ruff edge around your pup when after using magic wand click refine edge just below your tools across the top and drag few things about ( cant remember what I do as in bed  )

That's for a full black background.

Good luck!
