Has anyone tried to take any pics in there?

I was in there today & I was looking down in the main square, I took a couple of shots, nothing in particular, I was just taking a general shot of all the people walking around.
I then briefly went in a store & as I came out two security guards told me I couldnt take pics in there, they then asked what I was shooting & could they have a look, I had always thought I might say sod off but I let them see as I didnt have anything to hide.
They suggested I was taking the shots covertly (they didn't use that word, not sure they would know the meaning anyway), I explained I had my camera out in front & I was looking at the screen as it didnt have a viewfinder :bang:
They went on to say the ban was for 'security reasons' and had I seen that there were no bins in there?? :bang:
I asked they thought I was doing, they said I could have been taking shots of the layout to do something along the lines of terrorist activity, how I kept a straight face I will never know.

Has anyone else had any problem in the Manchester Arndale?

The bins were removed to stop bombs being placed in them (and litter) although why a suicide bomber would want to get in a bin I don't know.

Last time I was in there, last week, there were loads, and I mean loads, of oriental type tourists taking pictures with every type of camera, phones, compacts, bridge, slrs, movie, you name it. Not one of them got pulled up while I was watching, about 20 mins!

I took some photos in there on Monday afternoon and had no problems. Maybe they just didn't spot me being obvious!

You kitten Carole, where's your fire gone - you should have growled at them like you did on the meet in the paparazzi pose

It's quite well known the Arndale don't like photographers, although nothing on their website and I never saw anything when we were on the meet banning pics. I do remember Donald getting a stern talking too though :nono:

How you getting on with the editing stuff by the way??

I have had plenty of chances to take photos in there- setting up some of the mall units at night when it is empty. No security to stop me, but kinda dull photos -had more fun using the pallet truck as a scooter to do a quick "lap" round the centre.

Love it, thats brill Scott!!! Wish I'd thought of some of those replies, I did think of things afterwards but isn't that always the case :)
I know the reason regarding the bins Wayne, we had a massive bomb in Manc. I just didnt get their logic in them telling me that because I was taking photos, not looking for bins. I think they must come out with the same whatever a person is doing wrong :D

And to be fair on the terrorist threat, its quite likely that some of the security guards worked there when the IRA did blow up the centre of Manchester, and whilst times have changed, the memories are still there.

I think the reason they were so brave is because I was a woman on my own. I do remember Donald getting his wrists slapped yes, I wish you had been there to 'sort them out' for me ;)
Can out next meet be at the Arndale & we all start taking pics at the same time.
Photo editing is a breeze now Phil  I am improving though.

I agree Lawrie, I can still hear the boom to this day, I clearly remember it & the photos that were published in the Manchester Evening News, particularly the security guard holding the baby.
Whilst we need to be aware of the dangers of terrorism I think that we need to live our lives & move on & security guards need to see that people taking photos are just taking photos & not 'up to no good'

Only problems i had in there was as a Leeds fan in the 80's getting chased by some Man Utd fans:thumbsdown: , didn't have time to stop to take a photo though!!

While I agree it's pretty pathetic I was there shortly after the last time the place was attacked by terrorists - bit of a mess:shake:

So perhaps their sentiment was clouded by the current overzealous reaction to photographers in public and the fairly recent history of the Anrdale - or maybe they were just t*****s:nono:

same rules in pretty much all shopping centres and shops in general... commercial brands to protect, security and also liability issues - what happens if you're snapping away and fall down an escalator, or people trip up over a tripod, etcetc.
