Manchester Locations?

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone knows of any good locations around Manchester which will be good for night sky photography? Obviously I want to get away from the glare of the city but can't think of anywhere where there is no artificial light.

I've thought of Jodrell Bank but not sure if there's any easy access parking near by.

Cheers

Pete

Its easy enough to drive up through glossop to the hills that way, to Winter Hill - though don't know if you can get up that, but that can be seen round most of the norwthwest cos of the TV transmitter, south to Cheshire and round Jodrell Bank where it would be easy to pull over into a gateway on a quiet road.

You can drive almost to the top of winter hill from Horwich - mind you most of the last few weeks it's been shrouded in cloud:thumbsdown:

i'd second horwich/chorley sides too - just up the m61 - get off at the junction with the HUGE mormon church - take a right and your in a lil village with parking and low light.

I've taken some night-time photos up at the 'top' of Winter Hill (I have some equipment installed up at the transmitter site so have keys in case I get my collar felt!). and in all honesty, I'm not sure it's the best site for sky photography.

While it is a couple of miles away from heavily populated areas, the amount of light pollution, particularly towards the horizon, is quite severe. Manchester and Bolton are huge conurbations and the amount of light coming off them is pretty high. Most of the photos I took up there still have tonnes of orangey lowlights.

I'd consider other posters recommendations of Chorley and Jordell, think you'd get better shots there. I'm probably going to give it a shot myself tomorrow if the weather is as good as the Met Office predicts.
