Manual Focusing

Hi, started to use MF with my 18-70mm kit lens that came with the D70, on my D300s.

The reason for this is continous AF doesnt seem to work anymore, lens just cycles in and out of focus. The nifty fifty still works though, so its not the camera.

Only thing is, what seems in focus in the viewfinder and on the camera screen: when i import to the computer, its slightly out of focus.

Is there some magic you have to do when manually focusing ? I read somewhere you need to swap the viewfinder for an MF specific prism of some kind ?

I Must say it feels more pure doing it manually..

Thanks.

If you can guarantee you haven't moved whils pressing the shutter, or it's on a tripod, could be a front/back foucs issue.

If you have live view, try that and see if there's a difference.

You might want to check your dioptre adjustment wheel. Turn it to it's most plus direction then look at the AF point lines and turn it back to the minus till it's sharp. Then don't turn it any more. This should stop you from being able to accommodate to make the image clear in the viewfinder (but out of focus in the picture). I think you can get different focussing screens to make manual focusing easier though, but I don't know how easy they are to fit.

Little wheel next to the viewfinder. You can adjust the view so if you wear glasses, you can look in the viewfinder without glasses on.

My mum has adjusted hers, so everything is blurred through the viewfinder for me, but on the computer its fine.

Basically, you're eyes are out, get an eye test ;)

Otherwise the little wheel buy the eyepiece adjusts the diopter which accounts for your eyes not being perfect.

However, olde worlde focus screens are a boon for anyone whose not seen one before and want to manual focus.

What Dale said, just remember to go from most plus to minus - that'll stop you being able to accommodate to make the image clear without it actually being clear for the camera (if that makes sense)
