Hello

Relatively new to photography. Have a severly 'entry level' camera - Nikon D40. Recently burrowed into my grandads photography cupboard and found a telescopic lens he used for his photography back in the day. It fits! However, i expected the camera would not recognise it, and it didnt. Says no lens attached. I always considered the lens even on digital cameras to be completely manual, couldnt understand why a manual focus lens wouldnt be recognised... - is there any solution to getting a old, highly expensive lens to be compatible with a digital SLR?

Richard

has the lens got an A (auto) M (manual) switch on it? can you switch your camera to manual? I not familiar with Nikon as I am a Canon user, but most have similar features.

nb; It's telephoto, not telescopic by the way!!!!

it'll be totally manual, none of the A S or P programs will work, stick it on manual M and play about with the aperture ring on the lens and shutter speeds to take some pictures.

On a brightish day outdoors i'd try 200 iso 250sec @ F/5.6 as a starting point.

ok. i will try that next time im over his house. I cant remember if i flicked it onto ever setting including manual...have to try. everything else wouldnt even allow to take a photography. Yes, telephoto, lol that sounds aweful now ive said it :p

No problem mate! We all tend to make a howler now and then, even old hands! Good luck with your kit, get out there and take some pics (just remember the settings in case you do get some decent ones!)

Can you set the lens' focal length and max aperture (e.g. f/3.5) in your camera settings?
