Hi everyone,

Me and my partner are invited to a masquerade ball this weekend, it's being organised by a friend for his mums 50th. Anyway he and she like my photos and have asked if I would bring my camera along.

This will be a new experience and I'm ready for the challenge and to learn, the kit I'm planning on taking is my 35mm Sony 1.8 and Minolta 50mm 1.7, along with Sony FVL flash and a stoffen diffuser.

My worry is lighting. Although I can get low enough in terms of aperture my alpha 100 handles ISO poorly if I go higher than 400.

Any ideas?? Has anybody photographed a similar event?

Look forward to hearing your replys.

Matt

I did a burlesque show a couple of weeks ago, it was a very dark venue. I was shooting at f/2.8 and between 4000-6400 iso at 1/125 sec for most of it. At that speed I was struggling with camera shake and it wasn't quite fast enough to freeze all motion and I had a fair few that were just too dark to save.

If your camera performs poorly beyond 400 iso, I think you still really struggle. Flash is probably the way forward.

I took some photos at a friends 18th birthday and used a Canon 550D, a Sigma 18-125 f3.5-5.6 dc os and a Nissin Di866 flashgun. I managed to get some great shots with the flash being bounced off the ceiling as I didn't have a diffuser. My lens was a lot slower than the ones you're planning on taking but I managed to get shots between 1/125-1/200 and not taking the ISO above 200.
Have a practice at home in subdued lighting keeping your ISO as low as possible and adjusting the flash power to get the right shots.
